The Palestinian Authority has sharply condemned Israeli government plans to establish 22 new settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, calling the move a direct violation of international law and a dangerous provocation. The statement was made by Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, according to the WAFA news agency.
Abu Rudeineh said that the “covert decision” by the Israeli Cabinet to approve the construction of new settlements represents a major escalation and a blatant challenge to international norms.
“This decision violates all international resolutions and laws, especially UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which clearly defines all settlement activities in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, as illegal under international law,” he said.
The presidential spokesperson stressed that the Israeli government must end the destabilization of the situation in the West Bank and its continued aggression against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip.
Abu Rudeineh urged the United States to take immediate and decisive action to halt Israel's “destructive policies” across the Palestinian territories. He stated that Washington must hold Israel accountable and compel it to comply with international legal standards.
“The US must act before it's too late to prevent further deterioration in the region,” he warned, emphasizing the urgency of halting the violence not only in Gaza but also in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
