Palestinian Red Crescent Reports More Strikes Near Al-Quds Hospital

31 October 2023

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society has reported ongoing Israeli airstrikes in the vicinity of Al-Quds Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip. A statement posted on the organization's social media page (formerly Twitter) noted that the military is "continuously launching artillery and air strikes on the area where Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza is located." The statement further indicated that these attacks are causing the building to shake, creating fear and panic among refugees and staff.

Earlier, the Red Crescent reported that the Israeli army deliberately targeted the hospital building, likely with the intention of compelling staff, displaced individuals, and patients seeking shelter there to evacuate. Abdel Aziz Abu Aisha, a spokesman for the organization's leadership, highlighted the significant challenges in evacuating over 12,000 displaced people and more than 400 patients, many of whom are women and children, without exposing them to life-threatening risks.

The United Nations shares a similar view, emphasizing that it is extremely challenging to safely evacuate patients from hospitals in the Gaza Strip, particularly Al-Quds Hospital. Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, underscored the importance of protecting hospitals under international law, stating that evacuating hospital patients from conflict zones without endangering their lives is an immensely difficult task.
