07 October 2020

Syrian fighters pose a great danger in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone and are a cause of deep concern for Russia, the press secretary of the Russian president Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday.

"Of course, the presence of militants in the hot zone of conflict these days is a great danger and causes deep concern of Russia," he said.

When asked whether that concern could lead to any specific counteraction to the militants in the region, Peskov said he was "currently unaware of it".

On Tuesday, Russian and Iranian Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Mohammad Javad Zarif also touched upon the subject of militants from Syria and Libya in Nagorno-Karabakh in a telephone conversation. During the conversation, Lavrov pointed out the danger of involving radical militants from illegal armed groups in the conflict. In this regard, the ministers noted that there is no alternative to a diplomatic settlement, "the beginning of which should be a ceasefire without preconditions.
