Peskov: Military Officials to Represent Russia at Abu Dhabi Security Talks

23 January

The Russian delegation to the trilateral security group meeting in Abu Dhabi will consist exclusively of military personnel, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"These are military officers, representatives of the Ministry of Defense. We will not disclose their names at this time. They are all military. This is a working group on security issues, and these will be the initial negotiations," the Kremlin representative stated. He was responding to questions regarding the composition of the negotiating team, which is led by Igor Kostyukov, the head of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (formerly known as the GRU).

This diplomatic development follows a high-level meeting at the Kremlin between Russian President Vladimir Putin, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and businessman Jared Kushner. Yuri Ushakov, aide to the Russian president, described that conversation as exceptionally substantive, constructive, and characterized by a high degree of candor and trust. The talks, which centered on a settlement for the Ukrainian conflict, lasted approximately four hours. Moscow and Washington reached an agreement that the first session of the trilateral Russia-US-Ukraine working group on security matters would convene in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on January 23.
