Peskov: Russian Federation to monitor planned Meeting on Ukraine in Saudi Arabia

31 July 2023

Moscow will closely monitor the peace meeting on Ukraine that is planned to be held in Saudi Arabia, but it is currently uncertain about the objectives of such a meeting, stated Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov during a press briefing.

"Undoubtedly, Russia will closely monitor this meeting. However, it is still not entirely clear what specific goals are being pursued and what the organizers intend to discuss. We have consistently emphasized that any efforts aimed at promoting a peaceful settlement are commendable," he said.

At the same time, he highlighted the current absence of preconditions for a peaceful settlement in Ukraine. "Regarding the possibility of achieving a peaceful resolution at present, given the involvement of the Kiev regime and its current stance, the answer is clear: No, it is not possible. President Vladimir Putin has made this point clear. The Kiev regime does not have the desire or capacity for peace, as it is merely being utilized as a tool in the collective West's campaign against Russia," concluded the Kremlin spokesman.

The Wall Street Journal reported on July 29 that senior officials from 30 countries will attend the meeting, scheduled for August 5-6 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, but Russia is not included in the list of attendees.
