PKK Leader Ocalan Calls on Militants to Lay Down Their Arms

27 February

Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which is banned in Turkey, has called on members of the organization to lay down their arms and end their armed conflict with Turkey. Ocalan’s message was read out to journalists by representatives of the pro-Kurdish DEM party, who had recently visited him in prison, where he handed over the statement.

“I take historical responsibility for this call [to disarm]. Hold your congress and adopt decisions to integrate with the state and society, because every modern community and political party that has not ceased to exist through violence will eventually do so voluntarily. All groups [affiliated with the PKK] must lay down their arms, and the PKK itself should disband,” Ocalan’s message reads.
