Polyanskiy says Russia notes risk of escalation in Syria

The danger of escalation of tension in Syria's non-government-controlled territories remains, Russian first deputy permanent representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy, said on Wednesday at a Security Council meeting on Syria.

"Despite the general stabilization of the military-political situation in Syria, the risks of escalation of tension remain, in particular in non-government-controlled territories - Idlib, Euphrates region and Al-Tanf," he pointed out. According to Polyanskiy, the Russian Federation "apprehends with concern the reports about the ongoing illegal strikes of the Israeli air forces on the territory of the SAR".

The diplomat noted that in the northeast of the country, where terrorists from the group Islamic state (banned in Russia) are active, "there are internecine armed showdowns." "In this regard, we would like to reiterate the importance of promoting intra-Syrian dialogue in order to restore the unity, territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of the SAR," he concluded.
