The situation in Libya threatens to get out of control because of the continuing internal Libyan contradictions and the selfishness of the West, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the United Nations Dmitry Polyanskiy said on Monday, speaking at a meeting of the Security Council of the world organization.
"Because of the continuing internal Libyan contradictions and the selfishness of our Western colleagues, the situation in Libya threatens to get out of control," Polyanskiy said. - "In this regard, we once again emphasize the non-alternative of a UN-led settlement in the Libyan realities. The UN Support Mission in Libya in this configuration is assigned the role of a key mediator. However, this structure has long been "decapitated," and without a leader it cannot fully perform its critical functions of accompanying the national dialogue."
The actual chairing of the mission by Stephanie Williams, who has been appointed Special Advisor to the UN Secretary-General and is not subordinate to the Security Council, has been artificially delayed, despite assurances that it is a temporary measure," the diplomat said. - "We see evidence in this that our Western colleagues, in the spirit of neocolonial thinking, would like to impose their own scenario on Libyans as to how the future structure of their country should look like and who should govern it. We consider this line cynical and unacceptable".
According to him, the UN emissary must have a mandate from the Security Council. "We will proceed from the above when agreeing on the draft resolution on the extension of the mission's mandate in July. The time has come to put an end to selfishness of Western countries, which have appointed themselves as masters of justice in Libya," said the first deputy Russian representative to the UN.
"We note the secretary-general's determination to solve the problem and call on him to approach it in a balanced and reasonable manner," said the diplomat. - "We should not only ensure consensus on the candidacy of a special envoy to the UN Security Council, but also take into account the opinion of internal Libyan parties and regional players, and not give in to dictates of the Western camp, which considers Libya as its backyard."
