During his visit to Mali and Burkina Faso, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye raised the issue of these states returning to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Mali's state radio reported.
Previously, Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso had announced their withdrawal from ECOWAS and the formation of the Alliance of Sahel States. Recently, Niger's Prime Minister Ali Mahaman Lamine Zein invited the remaining ECOWAS members to join the Sahel Alliance.
"I spent a lot of time discussing this with Colonel Assimi Goita," - said Faye. - "I understand Mali's position, which, although tough, is not completely inflexible." The Senegalese president emphasized the need for all sides to work together to achieve positive results. "We should engage in bilateral cooperation to correct the mistakes made in multilateral cooperation," he added.
Faye also brought up the issue with Burkina Faso's leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, during his visit to Ouagadougou. "We also discussed the topic of ECOWAS," said Faye. "Today the position is firm, but I see it as a window for dialog," he stated, as quoted by Burkina Faso's presidential communications department.
