Russian president Vladimir Putin said that the Taliban (banned in Russia) can be removed from the list of terrorist organizations, but that this must be done at the UN level.
Speaking at a plenary session of the Valdai club, the head of state recalled that the decision to include the Taliban as a terrorist organization was made at the UN level. "We all expect from those people, from the Taliban, who now certainly control the situation in Afghanistan, we expect that the situation will develop in a positive way," Putin stressed. "We are in solidarity (with the general decisions on the Taliban) and will take a decision to remove them from this terrorist list, from the list of terrorist organizations," the Russian leader assured.
"I think we are getting to that," he admitted.
"Russia's position will be to move in this very direction," the Russian president noted. "But all the same, these decisions should be taken in the same way and manner that they were taken before when we included this movement in the list of terrorist organizations," the Russian head of state pointed out.
Continuing the topic of removing the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations, Putin reiterated that "this is not about Russia." "We cooperate with representatives of the Taliban, invite them to Moscow, and are in contact with them in Afghanistan itself," he said.
