27 September 2021

Russian and Turkish presidents Vladimir Putin and Tayyip Erdogan will discuss a wide range of issues at their upcoming talks, touching on the situation in Syria, Afghanistan and Libya in particular, press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday. "I think, first of all, Syria will be on the agenda, of course, Afghanistan, the traditional exchange of views on Libya and other international issues," said the Kremlin representative, answering the question about the agenda of the upcoming talks.

Peskov has stressed that "the presidents have something to talk about every time". According to him, in addition to regional topics, the upcoming talks are planned to discuss the economic agenda, "because, indeed, a lot of common things in terms of bilateral relations, work on joint projects in the field of economy, trade and economic relations, many operators of these relations." "The companies of the two countries are interested in that. So the presidents always discuss it," the presidential spokesman concluded.

The talks will take place in a face-to-face format. "Most, almost all meetings [of the Russian president] continue via videoconference, of course, the meeting with president Erdogan will be in person," the spokesman noted.

Peskov explained that Putin's remote format events are "preventive measures, precautionary measures" during the coronavirus pandemic. "They will continue one way or another, after all, we are talking about the president," he stressed, while noting that "contacts, the president's usual working schedule in full format continue."

The talks between Putin and Erdogan are expected to take place in Sochi on September 29. Earlier, the Turkish president reported that he expects to discuss with Putin Syria and come to some important decision. The last face-to-face meeting between the two presidents was held in March 2020 in the Kremlin. Due to the situation with the coronavirus pandemic, later talks were held over the phone or via video conferencing.
