Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iranian leader Ebrahim Raisi discussed the situation in Afghanistan in a telephone conversation and stressed their readiness to help establish peace and stability in that country, the Kremlin press service said on Tuesday following the conversation between the leaders.
"The Russian president reported on the planned delivery of Russian humanitarian aid to Kabul in the near future - food and essential goods," the report said.
During the exchange of views on the situation in Afghanistan, they "stressed their readiness to help establish peace and stability in that country," the Kremlin said.
Putin also told Raisi about Russia's measures to ensure a cease-fire regime in Karabakh. "The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh was also touched upon. Vladimir Putin informed about the measures taken by the Russian side to ensure the ceasefire regime, unblock economic and transport ties, establish peaceful life in the region," the report said.
Putin, in his conversation with Raisi, expressed hope that the talks on the JCPOA scheduled for the end of November in Vienna will take place in a constructive manner. The Kremlin noted that the state of affairs around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program was given special attention during telephone contacts. "Russia and Iran stand for its full implementation within the initially agreed framework," the press service reminded.
Putin and the Iranian president are also determined to further coordinate on Syria. "It was noted that largely due to coordinated Russian-Iranian efforts it was possible to preserve the statehood of Syria, eliminate a major hotbed of international terrorism," the press service of the Russian president reported the content of the conversation. "Both sides expressed their willingness to further coordinate on the Syrian settlement, including within the framework of the Astana format," the Kremlin stressed.
The press service pointed out that the presidents "discussed in detail the current topics of the international agenda." In addition, they "considered the main issues of bilateral cooperation, including the implementation of major joint investment projects, as well as cooperation in combating the spread of coronavirus infection".
Putin and Raisi agreed to continue contacts at various levels.
Efforts on Syria
Russia and Iran, along with Turkey, are guarantor countries and are making joint efforts for a Syrian settlement. The 16th international high-level meeting on Syria was held on July 7-8 in Nur-Sultan with delegations from guarantor countries, the Syrian government and the armed opposition. Negotiators discussed the situation in the Arab republic, international humanitarian aid, prospects for resuming the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, as well as confidence-building measures, including prisoner exchange, the release of hostages and the search for missing persons.
Earlier on Tuesday, it was reported that the Kazakh Foreign Ministry is ready to hold an international meeting on Syria in the Astana format in Nur-Sultan in the 20s of December.
