Putin Appoints Alexei Solomatin as Russian Ambassador to Algeria

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree appointing Alexei Solomatin as the new Russian Ambassador to Algeria. The decree was published on the official legal information portal.

 

“To appoint Alexei Vladimirovich Solomatin as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria,” the document states.

 

The position became vacant in July 2024 after the passing of Valerian Shuvaev, the previous ambassador, at the age of 69. Shuvaev had served in this role since 2022.

 

Solomatin, born in 1967, graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) in 1990 and has been in diplomatic service ever since. From 2004 to 2013, he held senior advisory positions, including Deputy Director of the Department of the Middle East and North Africa. Between 2013 and 2018, he served as the Russian Ambassador to Kuwait. Solomatin is fluent in Arabic, English and French.
