Putin Appoints New Special Representative for CIS Border Delimitation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Nikolai Udovichenko as his special representative for delimitation and demarcation of Russia's state borders with neighboring Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries, according to a decree published on the official legal information portal.

 

The document states that Udovichenko, Ambassador-at-Large at the Russian Foreign Ministry, will also assume responsibilities for border delimitation and demarcation with Abkhazia, Georgia, and South Ossetia.

 

In a separate decree, Udovichenko was additionally appointed head of the Russian delegation to multilateral negotiations on Caspian Sea matters.

 

He succeeds Mikhail Petrakov, who previously held both positions.

 

Nikolai Udovichenko, born in 1962, graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in 1984 and has served in diplomatic roles since then. His career includes positions at the Foreign Ministry's central office and overseas postings. He served as Russia's ambassador to Nigeria from 2013 to 2018 and as ambassador to Kyrgyzstan from 2019 to 2024. He is fluent in Hungarian and English.
