Putin assured Pashinyan of Russia's active mediation role in Nagorno-Karabakh

Russian President Vladimir Putin and acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan discussed the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border by phone. This was reported by the Kremlin press service on Wednesday.

"As a follow-up to the previous exchange of views, the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border was discussed in detail. Both sides expressed interest in the earliest possible settlement of the border incident through negotiations," the statement said.

During his conversation with Pashinyan the Russian President also stressed that Russia, as a mediator, "actively helps to normalize the situation and will continue to act in the same mode". The Kremlin added that it has been agreed to continue contacts on this and other issues.

Earlier on Wednesday, the President of Russia held telephone conversations with President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan.

After the end of hostilities in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone last fall, when seven districts adjacent to Nagorno-Karabakh went under Baku's control, Armenia's border with Azerbaijan became directly adjacent to Syunik and Gegharkunik regions.

On May 12, the Armenian Defense Ministry reported that, in the early morning hours, Azerbaijani armed forces attempted to carry out "certain works" in one of the border districts of the Syunik region in order to "adjust the border." Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan described the events as an encroachment on the country's territory. In turn, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said that the country's troops were moving "in positions belonging to Azerbaijan".
