Putin congratulated Nazarbayev on the 30th anniversary of his first election as president of Kazakhstan

Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Kazakhstan's first President Nursultan Nazarbayev on the 30th anniversary of his election to the highest state post.


"Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on the momentous date - the 30th anniversary of your victory in the first nationwide elections of the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan," Putin said in a telegram posted on the Kremlin website on Wednesday.


The Russian president noted Nazarbayev's contribution to the construction and development of Russian-Kazakh relations of strategic partnership and alliance. Putin also pointed to his activities to establish mutually beneficial integration processes in the post-Soviet space and constructive cooperation within the EAEC, CSTO, CIS, SCO and other multilateral structures.


"I have no doubt that your vast experience as a statesman, extensive knowledge, political wisdom and foresight will continue to be in demand both in Kazakhstan and in international affairs," the president stressed.


Nazarbayev, who turned 81 this July, is the first president of Kazakhstan (December 1991-March 2019). In March 2019, he signed a decree on resignation from the presidency at his own request. His successor as head of state was Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Nazarbayev then retained his positions as head of the country's Security Council, as well as a member of Kazakhstan's Constitutional Council and chairman of the Nur Otan ("Light of the Fatherland") party.


According to the results of the expanded meeting of Nur Otan's political council which was held on November, 23 it became known about Nazarbayev's decision to transfer the powers of the chairman of the party to Tokayev. According to the charter, election and dismissal of the chairman is the responsibility of the congress of the political association. The party's political council has the power to convene a congress. The date of the next congress has not yet been announced.
