Russian President Vladimir Putin in a telephone conversation with his counterpart from Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev discussed the recent events in Kazakhstan, the Kremlin press service reported.

"It was noted that thanks to the decisive and consistent actions of Kazakhstan's leadership, personally President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, as well as timely and effective assistance through the CSTO, the situation in the country has been promptly stabilized," the statement said.

On January 2, protests were held in a number of cities in Kazakhstan, which grew into mass riots and pogroms a few days later. They were accompanied by attacks on police, military and authorities in many cities across the country, especially in Almaty. Thousands of people were injured; the exact death toll is unknown.

After the appeal of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization sent peacekeepers to the republic. On January 13, the peacekeeping contingent began its gradual withdrawal from Kazakhstani territory, which will continue for several days. According to the authorities, constitutional order has been restored in all regions.
