Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for the inclusion of the African Union in the work of international organizations. During a meeting with Chairman of the African Union, President of the Union of the Comoros Azali Assoumani and Chairman of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat, Putin stated that Russia expects the African Union to become a full member of the G20 as early as September 2023.
"We support the involvement of the [African] Union in the work of leading international associations," Putin affirmed. He further highlighted that Russia was among the first countries to positively respond to the initiative to grant the African Union full membership in the G20. The decision on the African Union's full membership in the G20 is anticipated to be taken during the G20 summit in New Delhi in September.
Putin emphasized that Russia considers the African Union "as a leading regional organization that plays a crucial role in shaping a modern security structure on the continent and creating conditions for Africa's significant role in the global economic landscape."
In line with Russia's commitment to strengthening the sovereignty of African states, Putin assured that Russia is ready to provide assistance to Africa, making it one of the key partners in the emerging multipolar world order. These issues will be given special attention during the Russia-Africa summit, which commenced today.
