Russia is committed to fostering peace and stability in Syria while maintaining relationships with all involved parties, President Vladimir Putin stated during a combined direct line and press conference.
“The situation in the Syrian Arab Republic is certainly challenging today. We very much hope that peace and calm will prevail there,” Putin said. He emphasized that Russia maintains dialogue with “all groups controlling the situation and all countries in the region.”
Putin also noted that the majority of factions in Syria are interested in keeping Russian military bases in the country.
On November 27, armed opposition forces launched a large-scale offensive against Syrian army positions in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces. By the evening of December 7, opposition forces had seized Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs, and on December 8, they entered Damascus after Syrian government forces withdrew. President Bashar al-Assad stepped down and left the country.
On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir, who had led the opposition's so-called Salvation Government in Idlib since January 2024, declared himself head of Syria's transitional government, which will remain in place until March 1, 2025.
