Putin to Meet UAE President

29 January

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to hold talks with UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is arriving in Russia on an official visit.

According to the Kremlin press service, the two leaders will focus on the key pillars of multifaceted partnership, the current situation in the Middle East, and other pressing international issues. The Emirati side added that the discussions will specifically target opportunities for growth in the economic, trade, investment, and energy sectors.

This meeting follows trilateral negotiations on Ukraine held in Abu Dhabi on January 23–24. A follow-up round of talks involving representatives from Russia, the US and Ukraine is scheduled to take place in the UAE capital on February 1.

It has been an exceptionally busy week for the Russian president's international agenda. Just yesterday, Putin held talks at the Kremlin with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Earlier on Monday, he met with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme Head) of Malaysia, Sultan Ibrahim, in Saint Petersburg.

Previous Diplomatic Visits

President Mohamed bin Zayed has a long history of engagement with Russia, having visited multiple times during his tenure as chief of staff in the 1990s and as crown prince from 2004 to 2022. Since becoming president, he has made four official trips to Russia. This includes meetings with Putin in Saint Petersburg in October 2022 and June 2023.

In October 2024, he visited both Moscow and Kazan. That trip began with an informal dinner at the Novo-Ogaryovo residence on October 20, followed by official Kremlin talks the next day. He also attended the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, marking the UAE's first year as a full member of the bloc.

The UAE president’s most recent visit to Russia was on August 7, 2025. That meeting resulted in the signing of several key agreements focused on investment and transportation infrastructure.
