Russian president Vladimir Putin has urged the use of the potential of CIS member states' intelligence services to protect the CIS space from new threats. This was stated in his greeting to the participants in the XVII meeting of the CIS heads of security and intelligence services which opened on Wednesday in Moscow. Sergey Naryshkin, director of Russia's Foreign intelligence service (SVR), read out the greeting.
"The services and agencies you head have serious operational, technical and personnel capabilities, and today it is important to make maximum use of this powerful potential for the reliable protection of our states and the entire Commonwealth from internal and external threats," Putin said in his address. First of all, noted the president of Russia, to combat international terrorism and extremism, transnational criminal groups, illegal arms trafficking, cybercrime and drug trafficking, smuggling and illegal migration.
"Coordinated, systematic work in all key areas, constant exchange of information, and the conduct of joint operations are in high demand in the implementation of these tasks," the greeting notes. "You will discuss a wide range of topical issues related to ensuring the security of sovereignty and national interests of the CIS countries, share experiences and new developments, analyze the current situation in the world and the Eurasian region and give predictions for the future," said the president, expressing confidence that the decisions adopted during the meeting will serve to strengthen peace and stability in the CIS and contribute to further progressive development of our countries.
Sergey Naryshkin said the meeting was attended by delegations of nine CIS special services: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Russian Security council secretary Nikolai Patrushev, foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, CIS executive secretary Sergei Lebedev, FSB director Alexander Bortnikov.
