Qatar’s leadership is currently reevaluating its involvement in mediation efforts for the Gaza Strip, including whether to continue hosting the Hamas political bureau in Doha following Israel’s strike. Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani made the statement.
“In fact, this is what we’re doing right now. We’re going through the entire process. We’re having very detailed talks with the US government, and we need to decide what our next steps will be, because this is unacceptable,” he told CNN in response to questions about the future of the Gaza peace process and whether Qatar would maintain the Hamas political office after the Israeli strike on group leaders in the capital.
Sheikh Mohammed stressed that Qatari authorities did not consider the possibility that Hamas members residing in the country could be targeted by an attack. “Never. Have you ever heard of a neutral country, acting as a mediator in a conflict, being attacked because it was negotiating with one of the sides? That has never happened,” said the Prime Minister, whose country has hosted the Hamas political bureau since 2012.
“We are now in a very dangerous situation. Does the international community want a rules-based system, or just chaos? What we are seeing right now in our region—that is where the current Israeli prime minister is leading us: toward chaos, and nothing will stop him,” the Qatari leader added.
