Qatar Remains a Mediator Between Russia and Ukraine on Reuniting Displaced Children

17 June

Qatar continues to act as an intermediary in efforts to reunite Russian and Ukrainian children with their families, according to Majid bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, advisor to the Prime Minister and official spokesperson for the Qatari Foreign Ministry.

“As part of our mediation efforts, we are working on each case individually. These efforts are ongoing, and we’re seeing positive progress from both sides,” Al-Ansari said in response to a TASS question on whether Qatar remains involved following the resumption of direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul. “We welcome the constructive engagement of both Russia and Ukraine in this process,” he added.

Qatar has played a key mediating role in helping return children displaced from conflict zones to their families. With the support of Maria Lvova-Belova, the Russian Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights, and Qatar's mediation, 22 children from 15 families have been reunited with relatives in Russia, while 101 children from 81 families have returned to relatives in Ukraine or third countries.
