Qatar Says Talks on Gaza Ceasefire Still Face Major Hurdles

06 January

Negotiations aimed at advancing the Gaza ceasefire are ongoing but still face significant challenges, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson and adviser to the prime minister, Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, said on Tuesday.

“Since the very start of the agreement, Qatar — together with mediators from Egypt, Turkey and the United States — has been working to move discussions into their second phase,” Al Ansari told reporters. “Those contacts are still underway, but progress remains slow and several obstacles have yet to be overcome.”

He noted that while the sides have managed to reach common ground on many points, talks continue over how to implement the next stage of the deal.

Speaking about the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza, Al Ansari said Doha is cooperating with its partners to reopen the crossing and boost the flow of humanitarian aid. “Reopening Rafah would effectively mark the start of the second phase,” he said. “There are no new announcements to make yet, but we continue to engage with all parties.”
