Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have convened a meeting of the Supreme Strategic Committee between their nations in Doha, focusing on defense, investment, and energy collaboration while also addressing the situation in Gaza.
According to a statement from the Qatari leader's office, the discussions centered on "enhancing strategic cooperation across various sectors, particularly in defense, trade, investment, energy, and information technology." The leaders also examined key regional and international issues, including "efforts to maintain the ceasefire, sustain peace, and ensure humanitarian access to Gaza."
During the meeting, witnessed by both leaders, Qatar's Ministry of Defense and Turkey's Presidency of Defense Industries signed a memorandum of understanding on defense industry cooperation. Additionally, Qatar's Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Turkey's Trade Ministry issued a joint declaration.
Erdoğan arrived in Qatar on October 21 as part of a Gulf tour that previously included Kuwait and will continue to Oman.
Qatari-Turkish relations have strengthened significantly since Erdoğan's Justice and Development Party came to power. A 2014 military cooperation agreement led to the establishment of Turkey's "Tariq bin Ziyad" military base in Qatar. During the 2017-2021 diplomatic crisis when several Arab states imposed a blockade on Qatar, Ankara emerged as Doha's key ally, providing both political support and essential food supplies. A comprehensive economic partnership agreement signed in 2018 entered into force in August 2025.
