President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan has identified Russia as one of his country's primary political and economic partners, emphasizing the ongoing development of bilateral relations across various fields. The statement was made during expanded-format talks between the two nations' delegations in Dushanbe.
"Russia is one of Tajikistan's main political and economic partners. We cooperate closely in trade, economic, cultural, humanitarian, and security spheres. Many issues are resolved within the framework of our intergovernmental commission's work," President Rahmon stated.
The remarks were made during Russian President Vladimir Putin's state visit to Tajikistan on October 8-9. During his stay in Dushanbe, Putin is also scheduled to participate in the second "Central Asia-Russia" summit on October 9 and a meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State on October 10.
Tajikistan-Russia Relations
Since establishing diplomatic relations on April 8, 1992, Russia and Tajikistan have signed over 200 interstate treaties and agreements covering various areas of bilateral cooperation. In a congratulatory message to Rahmon in September on the occasion of Tajikistan's 34th Independence Day, President Putin highlighted the successful development of strategic partnership and alliance relations between the two nations, expressing confidence in the further enhancement of constructive ties.
According to Russian Federal Customs Service data, Tajikistan's share of Russia's total foreign trade turnover is 0.2%. Conversely, Russia remains one of the republic's largest trading partners, accounting for over 20% of Tajikistan's total foreign trade. Data from the Tajik side indicates that bilateral trade turnover for January-August of this year exceeded $1.4 billion, with a growth rate of 13%. For the full year 2024, trade between Tajikistan and Russia reached approximately $1.9 billion, a 15% increase compared to 2023.
Following talks with Rahmon at the Kremlin in March, President Putin stated that Moscow and Dushanbe are working towards a goal of increasing bilateral trade by 2.5 times by 2030.
