Red Crescent: Ambulance Crews in Gaza Spot Wounded, but Face Challenges Reaching Them

17 November 2023

Emergency medical teams from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) are currently confined within Al-Ahli Hospital in the Gaza Strip, rendering them unable to provide medical assistance to those injured in the recent Israeli airstrikes. The organization conveyed this information in a statement published on its social media page X (formerly Twitter).

"PRCS ambulance crews are still confined in Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza. The staff hears explosions, intense gunfire, and sees several injured people in the hospital courtyard, approximately 30 meters away from our teams, whom they cannot reach," the statement read.

The PRCS emphasized that due to the "continuous Israeli bombardment, rescue workers and paramedics collaborating with the Red Crescent Society in Gaza are confronting extremely challenging conditions, and they are vulnerable to attacks as military operations in the region persist." "At least 4 members of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society have been killed since the conflict began on October 7, with 22 others sustaining injuries. The security that our emblem once afforded is no longer guaranteed," the statement said.

Previously, the organization had stated that Israeli military vehicles had encircled Al-Ahli Hospital. This hospital is currently the sole operational medical facility in the northern Gaza Strip and its capital, capable of receiving patients. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, the hospital was accommodating more than 500 individuals as of November 14.
