The foreign ministers of the regional quartet (Russia, Iran, China, Pakistan) discussed the current situation in Afghanistan on the sidelines of the fourth ministerial conference of Afghanistan's neighbors. The Russian MFA reported on Thursday. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov took part in the event.
"The meeting allowed for a frank discussion of the situation in Afghanistan in a trusting atmosphere with a focus on security aspects, strengthening the coordination of regional efforts to combat threats of terrorism and drug trafficking emanating from the Afghan territory," the statement said.
According to the diplomatic office, the meeting agreed to continue building a unified consolidated regional approach to Afghan affairs, as well as cooperation with the current Afghan government, including with a view to maintaining domestic political stability and preventing humanitarian crisis in the country. "The participants agreed that the primary responsibility for Afghanistan's plight lies with the US and its allies due to the failure of their 20-year experiment in the country. The parties noted the unacceptability of the deployment of US-NATO military infrastructure in Afghanistan and the surrounding region," the ministry pointed out.
The ministry added that a joint statement was adopted following the meeting.
