Russia opposes politicizing of the events in Sudan at the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) and imposing "democratization" templates on the country. The Russian delegation said this on Thursday in Geneva at a special session of the HRC on Sudan convened at the initiative of the US and other Western countries.
"Russia has consistently opposed the politicization of the Sudanese issue in the HRC. Promoting this topic in the Council is counterproductive and does not contribute to resolving the crisis in the country," Russian diplomat Yaroslav Yeremin said in his speech at the session. "Imposing rather dubious socio-economic patterns and universal 'democratization' templates on the Sudanese leadership from outside, as well as the politicization of issues related to providing economic and financial assistance is unacceptable", he stressed.
Moscow is convinced that the people of Sudan "are able and must solve their internal problems on their own." "The international community, including the UN Human Rights Council, should assist them as much as it can," Yeremin said.
"We call on the parties to the conflict to show political will and take immediate steps for a cease-fire," the diplomat continued. After the end of the armed confrontation, "practical steps must be taken to resume inter-Sudanese dialogue." "In order to make it inclusive, we consider it important to involve all Sudanese influential political groups in this process, including authoritative regional leaders," Yeremin stated.
The special session of the HRC on Sudan was convened at the suggestion of Great Britain, Germany, Norway and the United States.
