Russia demands release of Guinea's president

09 September 2021

Moscow is alarmed by the change of power in Guinea by force and demands the release of President Alpha Condé and ensuring his immunity, Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

According to her, Moscow continues to closely monitor the situation in Guinea.

"Moscow expresses concern about the change of power in Guinea by force, we demand the release of Alpha Condé, ensuring his immunity, we consider it extremely important to prevent an escalation of tensions, to take the necessary steps to return the situation to the constitutional field," Zakharova said during a briefing.

Russia considers that there is no alternative to settling the situation in Guinea but restoration of law and order and establishing a national dialogue as soon as possible, stated Russian foreign ministry spokesperson.

On September 5, the media reported about the coup d'état in Guinea. Colonel Mamadi Doumbouya announced the dissolution of the government, the abolition of the current constitution and the closure of borders. According to him, the president of the country, Alpha Condé, is under the control of the military in a safe place. Condé is 83 years old and has led the country since 2010. In March 2020, a referendum approved constitutional amendments allowing him to hold office for two more terms. The opposition boycotted the referendum, and more than 40 people were killed in the riots. In addition, although Guinea is a rather poor country, in July a law was passed to increase Condé's salary, which provoked local indignation.
