Russia is moving forward with plans to expand its diplomatic footprint in Africa, with several new embassies in the pipeline, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova announced at a recent briefing.
According to Zakharova, preparations are underway to reopen Russian embassies in Niger and Sierra Leone, and to establish a new diplomatic mission in South Sudan. These steps follow a government directive issued in December 2024.
Russia also intends to strengthen its presence in The Gambia, Togo, and the Comoros Islands.
Zakharova emphasized that this effort is part of a broader push to deepen economic, political, and investment cooperation with African partners. “This is not a one-way initiative. We are also responding to strong interest from African countries in closer engagement with Russia,” she said.
