Russia Open to Assisting in Resolving Sudan Conflict, Ambassador Says

12 April

Russia is prepared to offer assistance in resolving the conflict in Sudan, according to the country's embassy, which maintains contact with Sudan's official authorities. Russian Ambassador to Khartoum, Andrei Chernovol, made this statement in an interview with TASS.

"We support all efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the best interests of the Sudanese people and are ready to provide assistance. It's important to note that the political resolution of the crisis is a matter for the Sudanese themselves. For our part, we are open to any assistance in finding a mutually acceptable solution," Chernovol emphasized.

Chernovol highlighted that the Russian diplomatic mission is based in Port Sudan, the temporary capital of Sudan, and that diplomats continue to engage with Sudan's official authorities.

"Mutual interaction and coordination on multilateral platforms, especially within the UN, remain crucial for both sides," he noted. He also mentioned that the head of the Rapid Support Force opposing the official authorities, Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, has not sought Russian assistance in resolving the conflict, while "outside Sudan, he is actively in contact with both Westerners and Africans."

The diplomat further observed that Sudanese society has unconditionally supported the national army, while the SIS has become closely aligned with foreign mercenaries and their external sponsors. This is also supported by the fact that three-quarters of the "rebels" are fighters from African countries.

The situation in Sudan escalated in April 2023 due to disagreements between the chairman of the country's Sovereign Council and army commander Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the head of the Rapid Support Force. The main points of contention between the two are related to the timing and methods of forming a unified armed forces, as well as who should hold the post of commander-in-chief - a professional military officer, as advocated by al-Burhan, or an elected civilian president, as insisted by Dagalo.
