Russia is ready to provide possible assistance to Lebanon in the investigation of the circumstances of the August 2020 Beirut port explosion, Russian embassy spokesman in the Lebanese capital Dmitry Lebedev told RIA Novosti.
Earlier on Friday, Lebanese president Michel Aoun's press office said he had officially asked Russian ambassador in Beirut Alexander Rudakov to provide satellite images of the Beirut port at the time of the explosion.
"In the development of traditionally friendly Russian-Lebanese relations, the Russian side is ready to provide possible assistance," Lebedev said, confirming receipt of the request for satellite images.
According to him, Aoun and Rudakov met on Friday at the invitation of the Lebanese side. The parties discussed the Lebanese side's request as a follow-up to Russian president Vladimir Putin's speech at the Valdai forum, which included the possibility of Moscow's assistance in investigating the circumstances of the Beirut port explosion.
"The tragedy at the port, as we well remember, was a difficult ordeal for the entire Lebanese people. We have always supported an objective, unbiased and non-politicized investigation of those circumstances," Lebedev added.
