Russia believes that the United Nations should take the lead in coordinating international efforts to resolve the conflict in Sudan, First Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Dmitry Polyansky said.
“We take note of various mediation initiatives and proposals aimed at supporting a settlement,” Polyansky stated during a UN Security Council meeting on the situation in Sudan. “At the same time, we proceed from the understanding that the United Nations must play the leading and guiding role in coordinating such efforts and in fostering a constructive atmosphere of engagement among key regional actors. Most importantly, no initiative for a sustainable political settlement should be adopted behind the backs of the Sudanese people. It is essential to rely on Khartoum’s position and its vision for overcoming the crisis,” he said.
The Russian diplomat added that Moscow expects more active engagement from the UN Secretary‑General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra. “We hope that following his contacts with the warring sides and regional partners, the Council will receive specific and well‑considered proposals outlining the parameters of a fair political settlement — one that does not infringe on the Sudanese people’s sovereign right to determine their state’s future configuration,” Polyansky emphasized.
He concluded by reaffirming that “Russia remains ready to make a constructive contribution to collective efforts aimed at restoring peace, stability, and unity in Sudan.”
