Russia Transfers Five Ukrainian Children with Qatar’s Mediation

27 March

Five Ukrainian children will soon reunite with their families in Ukraine through the efforts of Russia’s Presidential Commissioner for Children's Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, and with Qatar’s mediation, according to a TASS correspondent.

The children, accompanied by their guardians, met with Qatar’s Ambassador to Russia, Ahmed bin Nasser Al Thani, and the Head of the Children's Ombudsman’s office, Alexey Gazaryan, at the Qatari Embassy in Moscow.

According to Lvova-Belova, the group includes two girls and three boys aged 11 to 17. One girl had been living in Russia with her great-uncle, as her mother had lost parental rights; she will now be reunited with her grandmother in Ukraine. Another girl, who had been staying with her grandmother in Russia, will return to her father. One of the boys had been in a care facility in Russia and will now join his mother, while the others are moving from one set of relatives to another.

“We are grateful to the State of Qatar for facilitating this process—they have handled negotiations with Ukraine, covered transportation and other logistical costs, and ensured safe travel for the children and their families. The International Committee of the Red Cross and various government agencies have also played a crucial role,” Lvova-Belova stated.

According to the ombudsman’s office, 20 children from 13 families have been reunited with relatives in Russia, while 100 children from 80 families have rejoined their families in Ukraine and third countries through these efforts.

Successful Humanitarian Cooperation

Qatar’s ambassador emphasized the strong and growing humanitarian partnership between Qatar and Russia. “The State of Qatar considers this a significant issue and remains committed to continuing its efforts in this humanitarian mission,” he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov previously acknowledged Qatar’s mediation role during his visit to Doha in February, affirming that Qatar would continue its work in facilitating family reunifications for children from Russia and Ukraine.
