Russia Urges Lebanon to Avoid Civil War Amid Escalating Conflict

24 March

Russia is actively engaging with Lebanese authorities to prevent the country from descending into a new civil war, Alexander Rudakov, the Russian Ambassador to Lebanon, told in a recent interview with Vesti.

"In our contacts with all representatives of the Lebanese establishment, the Russian Federation urges them, above all, to prevent a slide into civil war," Rudakov stated. Regarding external factors, he emphasized the need for a concerted effort to strengthen the Lebanese army. He argued that the military must evolve into a more stable pillar of political society, capable of protecting Lebanon from any external aggression or influence.

"The civil war, which lasted fifteen years and claimed several hundred thousand lives, remains the ultimate threshold that must never be crossed again. We cannot move past that point without risking a new spiral of violence. Such a turn of events would undoubtedly play into the hands of external actors who, as we have seen in many other countries, seek to use internal conflict to strip legitimacy from one political party or another," the ambassador added.
