Russia Welcomes Indonesia as a Full Member of BRICS

09 January

Moscow has welcomed Indonesia’s accession to BRICS as a full member, highlighting that this will further enhance the bloc’s global standing. The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement emphasizing the significance of this development.

“The Russian Federation welcomes the Republic of Indonesia joining BRICS as a full member starting January 1, 2025,” the statement read. “Indonesia’s accession will bolster the bloc’s authority and foster greater cohesion among the Global South and East in advancing a more just and balanced multipolar world order.”

Consensus-Based Approval

The ministry noted that Indonesia's candidacy was introduced and preliminarily approved during the first phase of BRICS expansion at the Johannesburg Summit in 2023. “However, due to Indonesia's 2024 presidential elections, Jakarta postponed its formal application until the new administration took office,” the ministry explained.

During Russia’s chairmanship of BRICS in 2024, Indonesia submitted an official request for membership. The application was reviewed according to the guidelines and procedures established in 2023, receiving unanimous support from all member states, the statement added.

The ministry highlighted Indonesia’s status as the largest economy and most populous nation in Southeast Asia. “Indonesia shares BRICS values and supports fostering multilateral cooperation based on mutual respect, openness, pragmatism, solidarity, and consensus,” the statement concluded.
