Russian Ambassador: Comprehensive Treaty with Iran Near Completion

26 June

The work on a comprehensive cooperation treaty between Russia and Iran is nearing completion, with only technical issues remaining, Russian Ambassador to Iran Alexey Dedov told ISNA.

"On Sunday, Acting President [of Iran Mohammad] Mokhber announced the commencement of two agreements on the establishment and operation of cultural centers in Iran and Russia, as well as an agreement on cooperation in information security, previously approved by the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Iran's unicameral parliament)," said the ambassador. He noted that the work on the comprehensive cooperation agreement between Iran and Russia is nearing its conclusion. According to Dedov, considering some technical aspects and the upcoming presidential elections in Iran, "the final signing of this agreement will take place under the next, 14th government."

On June 11, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that the text of the comprehensive treaty between Russia and Iran is fully agreed upon, but cannot be signed yet due to several procedural matters that need to be addressed by Tehran. Both sides express full commitment to concluding the agreement. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also mentioned that work on the agreement is ongoing, although the timeline might shift slightly due to Iran's preparations for the presidential elections.

Iran's extraordinary presidential elections are scheduled for June 28. Out of 80 applicants, the Guardian Council shortlisted only six candidates.
