Russian Ambassador Highlights Somalia's Appreciation for Moscow's Contribution to Food Security

03 July

Somalia values Russia's contributions to its food security and appreciates Moscow's support in the socio-economic sphere. This was stated by Mikhail Golovanov, Russia's ambassador to Djibouti and concurrently to Somalia, in an interview with TASS.

"On the bilateral front, a significant positive impact, accompanied by widespread positive media coverage and public-political resonance, was the official handover ceremony of the first batch of Russian humanitarian food aid (25,000 tons of grain) to the government of the Federal Republic of Somalia (FRS) on November 30, 2023, in the seaport of the Somali capital, Mogadishu, following the directive of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In January 2024, a second batch of 25,000 tons of grain was delivered as a gift to the Somali government," the ambassador said.

He added that in February 2024, the Russian embassy received a letter from Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud addressed to the President of Russia. "In his message, the Somali leader expressed gratitude to the Russian leadership for its support in the socio-economic sphere. The letter emphasized the key role of our country in ensuring the food security of the Federal Republic of Somalia," the diplomat noted.
