Russian Ambassador: Middle East Situation Reflects US Interest in Creating Chaos

23 September

The current situation in the Middle East indicates Washington’s troubling interest in fostering chaos, Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov told a TASS correspondent.

“I want to highlight the role of the United States in everything that’s happening in the Middle East. It seems that the leaders of US foreign policy have a pathological interest in creating chaos, and unfortunately, the Middle East is no exception,” he said.

“What began with the ‘Arab Spring’ in 2011 seems to continue in different forms,” Viktorov emphasized. He noted that for "several months now" the international community has been awaiting the implementation of US President Joe Biden’s initiative for a ceasefire deal in Gaza, which was “pushed to the UN Security Council like a cat in a bag.” The Security Council “approved this initiative to establish agreements between representatives of Israel, Palestine, and Hamas on a ceasefire, as well as the exchange of hostages and detainees,” Viktorov explained. “So, where is this initiative? Where is its implementation?” he asked.

“The international community is constantly being told that peace is imminent, that the deal will come into force, but these promises remain in the air while people continue to die on all sides, including innocent civilians,” said the Russian ambassador, stressing that the situation is “absolutely intolerable.” He also criticized US diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation along the Blue Line, which separates Lebanese and Israeli territories. “So far, these calls for diplomatic solutions, voiced by US representatives at all levels, don’t align with what their representatives are actually doing on the ground,” Viktorov added.

“There are many opinions that recent actions between the warring sides, including the cyberattack in Lebanon, the assassination of Hamas leaders, and members of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, are aimed at drawing the US into the conflict,” Viktorov noted. “I have a suspicion that it may be our former American partners themselves who are facilitating such actions, waiting for a convenient moment to involve themselves in this conflict,” the Russian ambassador concluded.
