Russian Ambassador: Russia Working to Prevent Further Escalation in Lebanon

26 March

The Russian side is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to prevent the current hostilities in Lebanon from expanding further, Alexander Rudakov, the Russian Ambassador to Lebanon, told Izvestia.

Rudakov noted that Russia maintains regular contact with local authorities and is taking "diplomatic steps to restrain the scaling up of military actions." He pointed out that the region was already unstable even before the recent crisis involving the Islamic Republic of Iran.

"For 15 months, the Israelis violated existing ceasefire agreements on an almost daily basis, whereas no threats were emanating from Lebanese territory," the ambassador remarked.

In his dialogue with Lebanese officials, Rudakov emphasized that Russia is urging the republic to act with responsibility and to avoid taking any impulsive actions that could "shatter the already fragile domestic balances."

He also drew attention to the fact that the intensification of combat within the country is largely a consequence of the broader aggression by Israel and the United States against Iran.
