Russian ambassador says Moscow and Dushanbe are building a joint air defense system

21 November 2022

The creation of a joint regional air defense system of Russia and Tajikistan is necessary because the situation in the region is becoming tense. Russian Ambassador to Dushanbe Semyon Grigoryev told TASS in his first interview, who presented his credentials to President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan.

"The contractual basis for this [the creation of a joint air defense system of Russia and Tajikistan] already exists. Our countries agree that this cooperation is necessary because the situation in the region tends to increase tensions," he said.

Grigoryev added that the air defense system of Russia and Tajikistan "will be created under the control of military departments of both countries."

In April, Deputy Chairman of the  Coordinating Committee on Air Defense Issues under the Council of Defense Ministers of the CIS member States Colonel General Yuri Grekhov reported that for implementation of the agreement on the establishment of the joint regional air defense system between Russia and Tajikistan, the draft list of military government bodies, command centers (command posts), units, formations and military units to be included in the joint regional air defense system of Russia and Tajikistan was developed and is being approved by the Central Military District Air Defense Department.

The Russian Federation and Tajikistan ratified an agreement on the creation of a joint air defense system in December 2021. Taking into account the separation of the territories of the two countries, the parties to the agreement will allocate a separate collective security area within the region within the territory and airspace of Tajikistan.
