Russia and Tajikistan may significantly increase the volume of investment cooperation in the coming years. Russian Ambassador to Dushanbe Semyon Grigoryev, who presented his credentials to President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, told TASS in his first interview.

"There are all possibilities for us to make a serious breakthrough in investment cooperation in the next year or two, as the future of our relations is in greater integration and cooperation," he said.

Grigoryev noted that at a recent meeting of the intergovernmental commission of Russia and Tajikistan, the heads of the delegations came to the conclusion that there are very many untapped resources in investment cooperation.

"Therefore, a working group will be established soon between the ministries of industry of the two countries, which will consider Tajikistan's proposal on a possible broader participation of Russia in the development of the Tajik economy," the ambassador continued.

The diplomat stressed that cooperation in the investment sphere is the basis of any interstate economic cooperation.

Russia remains Tajikistan's leading foreign trade partner, accounting for about 21.3% of the country's foreign trade. The total volume of accumulated investments of Russia in the economy of this country is $1.6 billion or 16% of all foreign investments. More than 300 enterprises with Russian and joint capital operate in the republic, including subsidiaries of "Gazprom", "Vympelcom", "Megafon" and others.
