Russian Ambassador to Israel Recommends Citizens Leave via Egypt

16 June

Russian Ambassador to Israel Anatoly Viktorov has advised Russian citizens to leave the country through Egypt, noting that several dozen people have already evacuated this way. Speaking on the Russia-24 television channel, the diplomat described how Russians can leave Israel independently.

“There is such an opportunity. In southern Israel, near the city of Eilat on the border with Egypt, there is a functioning border crossing. One can cross into Egyptian territory there at any time, travel on to Sharm el-Sheikh or Cairo, and take Aeroflot or other airline flights back to Russia. Russian citizens do not need a visa; entry is permitted with valid Russian documents,” Viktorov explained.

He noted that “several dozen Russian citizens have already used this route” and added, “They did the right thing.” He also mentioned the existence of a land border crossing into Jordan, but pointed out that Jordan's airspace is currently closed, and flights are being cancelled periodically.

“The situation is tense—I have to say this openly. The risk to the lives and safety of diplomats and Russian citizens in Israel is not theoretical,” the ambassador emphasized.

He said the embassy strongly recommends that “all Russian citizens currently in Israel leave the country until the situation normalizes.”

Viktorov stated that while the embassy is considering evacuation options, “citizens who wish to ensure their safety do have a way to do so.” He added, “We are closely monitoring the situation and will take further action if necessary.”
