Russian and Syrian Foreign Ministers Discuss Expanding Cooperation

24 December

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Syrian Foreign Minister in the transitional government Asaad al-Shaibani held talks in Moscow to deepen political dialogue between Moscow and Damascus and establish mutually beneficial cooperation across various fields, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the meeting.

“The conversation focused on practical steps to develop bilateral relations, including strengthening political dialogue and fostering mutually advantageous cooperation in multiple areas. In this context, the effective work of the Permanent Russian-Syrian Commission on Trade, Economic, and Scientific-Technical Cooperation was highlighted,” the ministry reported.

The two sides reaffirmed Russia’s principled stance in support of Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity during their exchange of views on the situation in and around Syria.

“They emphasized the need to consolidate international and regional efforts to promote sustainable stabilization in the Syrian Arab Republic and support its post-conflict economic recovery,” the foreign ministry added.

The ministers also discussed current international and regional issues. “They outlined a common position in favor of intensifying collective efforts to normalize the situation across the Middle East and North Africa. Contacts will continue at various levels, including at the UN and other multilateral platforms,” the statement concluded.
