15 September 2021

Russian deputy foreign minister Sergei Vershinin and President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer discussed on Tuesday in Geneva steps to strengthen cooperation in the context of the humanitarian situation, including in Afghanistan.

"The meeting continued a detailed discussion of the current humanitarian agenda in Afghanistan, Syria, Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as other regions. In this context, practical aspects of strengthening cooperation between Russia and the ICRC were considered," the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Taliban movement (banned in Russia) launched a large-scale operation for establishing control over Afghanistan after the US announced its decision to withdraw its armed forces from the country this spring. On August 15, the radicals entered Kabul without a fight, and the president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, left the country. On September 6, the movement announced that it had taken control of all of Afghanistan, and on September 7, it announced the composition of the provisional government of the country.
