Russian Deputy Permanent Representative commented on the UN Security Council resolution on Somalia

Mentioning of the paragraphs on Djibouti and Eritrea in the UN Security Council resolution on Somalia has nothing to do with the Somali sanctions regime, Anna Evstigneeva, deputy permanent representative of Russia to the world organization, said on Monday, speaking at a meeting of the Security Council.

"The Russian Federation abstained on a draft Security Council resolution prepared by Britain to extend the sanctions regime on Somalia," Evstigneeva said. - "We regret that the Security Council again failed to reach consensus, although such a prospect was quite tangible".

The Russian side disagrees with the retention of the paragraphs on Djibouti and Eritrea in the document. "The sanctions on Eritrea were lifted by the Security Council back in 2018," the diplomat noted. - "The situation between Djibouti and Asmara is not a threat to international peace and security." According to the Russian deputy permanent representative, the resolution of the remaining contentious issues between these countries lies in the plane of bilateral diplomacy. "These assessments have been reproduced for four years now by the UN Secretary-General in her annual reports to the Security Council," Evstigneeva pointed out.

"We assume that the above provisions are outdated and have nothing to do with the Somali sanctions regime," the diplomat stressed. - "We regret if their retention in a Security Council document pursues the bilateral goals of individual Council members or is used as a means of pressure on the "unwanted. In this context, we also condemn the practice of applying or threatening to apply illegal unilateral sanctions".
