Russian diplomats recently visited Shamoniya Karakozova, a Great Patriotic War veteran living in Ashgabat, to congratulate her on her 98th birthday, according to a statement from the Russian Embassy in Turkmenistan.
“The embassy team sends their warmest wishes to Shamoniya Mikhailovna for many more years of health, happiness and endless energy,” the statement said.
During the war, Karakozova worked in a hospital alongside her peers, helping to care for and rehabilitate wounded soldiers. After the war, she graduated from medical school and dedicated many years to practicing as a doctor, earning recognition as a labor veteran.
The people of Turkmenistan made significant contributions during the Great Patriotic War. Around 300,000 residents from the Turkmen SSR fought in combat, with 130,000 receiving orders and medals. Among them, 104 were honored as Heroes of the Soviet Union, and 15 were full holders of the Order of Glory.
Turkmen citizens also supported the war effort by contributing 243 million rubles toward the production of planes and tanks, donating nearly 7,400 kilograms of silver and gold, and sending 202 freight cars filled with gifts for Red Army soldiers. They also provided 2 million warm garments and underwear, while collecting and delivering over 20,000 tons of scrap metal to aid the front lines.
