Staff from the Russian Embassy in Ashgabat visited Great Patriotic War veteran Mikhail Khachaturov to congratulate him on his 107th birthday, the embassy’s press service reported.
“We cordially congratulate Mikhail Mikhailovich on his birthday and wish him many more years of life, prosperity, and strong spirit,” the statement read.
Khachaturov was drafted into the Red Army in 1942 and served as a regimental engineer in the 289th Rifle Regiment. He fought with the 1st and 2nd Ukrainian Fronts and took part in operations to liberate Czechoslovakia. For his courage in combat, he was awarded the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class, and nominated for the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
During the Great Patriotic War, some 300,000 Turkmenistanis took part in combat operations, with 130,000 receiving orders and medals, 104 earning the title of Hero of the Soviet Union, and 15 becoming Full Cavaliers of the Order of Glory.
