Assimi Goita, President of Mali's interim period, was not injured during Tuesday's attack on him at a mosque in the Malian capital of Bamako, the attackers were detained, the Russian embassy in Mali told TASS.
"According to our information, interim president Assimi Goita was attacked on July 20 during prayers at a mosque in Bamako on the day of celebration of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. The attackers were detained by law enforcement forces. The president was not hurt," said the diplomatic mission.
A military team led by Vice-President Goita arrested Mali's interim President Bah Ndaw and Prime Minister Moctar Ouane on May 24. After 48 hours in custody at an army base, they both said they were stepping down from their posts. Immediately thereafter, the Constitutional Court of Mali declared Colonel Goita the interim president and head of state. He was inaugurated on June 7. On the same day, Goita issued a decree appointing Chogaille Kokalla Maiga, who hails from the opposition to the previous Government of the 5 June Movement - Rally of Patriotic Forces, to head the Government.
